Milk and Cream.
MILK.
798 samples of milk were procured for analysis during the year.
76 or 9.5 per cent. were reported against as being adulterated
or not up to legal standard.
781 samples were purchased officially, of which 72 or 9.1 per
cent. were adulterated, and 17 samples purchased informally, of
which four were reported against.
35 samples were found to contain added water, 36 were deficient
in milk fat, three were deficient in milk fat and contained added
water, one contained a preservative and added water, and one
contained a preservative.
Proceedings were taken in 35 cases, in four cases proceedings
were barred by informality of purchase, and in 37 cases the Public
Health Committee, after considering the amount of adulteration
and the circumstances of sale, decided not to prosecute the vendors,
but to take further samples.
31 samples of milk were taken on delivery at various Public
Institutions situated within the Borough. All these samples were
reported to be genuine.
43 samples of milk were procured whilst in transit from the
farmer to the retailer, the samples being taken as the milk arrived
at various railway stations within the Borough, both at mid-night
and mid-day deliveries.
One sample was reported against as being deficient in milk fat
to the extent of 3 per cent. No action was taken.
