Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
(6)—As in previous years, special inspections were made of several
localities in consequence of complaints of smells from road
gullies and sewer ventilators.
The number of complaints was greater than in the previous
year, especially in Streatham; this having been due to the
fact that the climatic conditions were favourable.
In all 214 complaints were received, compared with 117
in 1910: 11 from Clapham North, 10 from Clapham South,
24 from Putney, 56 from Streatham, 22 from Balham, 21 from
Tooting, 33 from Southfield, 12 from Fairfield, and 25 from
Springfield Wards.
All these complaints were forwarded to the Borough
Engineer, who reported that in all the cases the necessary
cleansing and flushing, or other work, had been carried out.
(7)—Inspections were also made of several passages and mews,
with the result that several have been satisfactorily dealt with,
but there still remains some in which, owing to legal difficulties
as to ownership, the necessary work has not been done.
