Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
An examination of the above shows that the increase in the
different Wards has varied considerably, being as low as 33 per cent.
in Clapham North, and as high as 1183 per cent. in Tooting.
The total increase for the Borough was 79,368 persons, 36,980 males
and 42,388 females, or 343 per cent. This was the largest increase
in the Metropolitan Area, the next being Lewisham with 26.2 per
cent. The increase in the Borough is not so great as in the
decennium 1891-1901, when it was 49.2 per cent.
For the whole of London the population was 4,522, 961, compared
with 4,536,267 in 1901, a decrease of 3 per cent.
Table I. also shows that the number of males increased by
35.6 per cent. and the number of females by 33 per cent. In the subdistricts
the percentage increase in the number of males was less
than of females in Putney and Springfield, while in the other subdistricts
this percentage was higher.
