REPORT OF THE WANDSWORTH LIBRARIES
SUB.COMMITTEE.
For the Year ended 31st March, 1912.
The Committee appointed by the Council in November, 1911,
were Councillor Harrison (Chairman), the Mayor, Councillors
Couzens, Everett, B.A., Evershed, Junr., J. A. Robinson and
Shillington.
A vote of thanks was passed to Councillor W. J. Harrison
for his services as Chairman during last year.
Issues.
The efforts of the Sub.Committee have been specially devoted
to leading users of the Library into the reading
of literature which is calculated to improve and
instruct as well as providing for them interesting and entertaining
books for leisure hours.
The results are very satisfactory in that the proportion of
educative issues has gone up, whilst that of fiction has gone down,
and it is hoped to see further advances in the same direction. The
gross issues are higher (see tabulated statement).
Coronation.
The Libraries were closed for the Coronation
event on June 22nd and 23rd.
Annual
Closing.
It was decided that no change be made in
the date of the annual closing of the three libraries
in Wandsworth.
Maintenance.
West Hill Library.
The linoleum at the West Hill Library, after
being down since 1885, has been renewed at a cost
«f £23.
Reference
Room.
The facilities for readers are so deficient and the impossibility
of bringing all the book stock of this class into one
place is so apparent, that the Committee can only
in the absence of the means to rectify the trouble, put the facts on
