New Schools.
90. Notice has been received from the London County
Council of its intention to erect a new school
for about 1,000 children, on part of the Furzedown
site West Streatham, and to apply for statutory powers of purchase
over a site for a school in Derinton Road, Tooting.
London County
Council Education
Committee.
91. In view of the very large area and population of the
Division, this Council passed a resolution requesting,
the London County Council to appoint on its
Education Committee a Member resident in the
County Council Electoral Division of Wandsworth, and therefore
acquainted with the educational needs of that Division. The County
Council stated in reply that in appointing its Committees it was
the practice to consult the wishes of Members, and that, with
regard to the co-opted Members of the Committee, in the absence
of any other qualification than residence in a particular locality,
a person would not be eligible for co-option, and that the Council's
letter would receive further consideration at the next re-appointment
of Committees. A copy of the correspondence with the
County Council was forwarded to the Chairman of each body of
Managers in the Division, and a number of Managers expressed
their concurrence in the resolution, and communicated their views
to the County Council.
Powers and
Duties of
Managers.
92. The Council has again urged the desirability of increasing
the powers and duties of Managers, but was informed
that the appropriate Committee of the
County Council who considered this Council's communication did
not see their way to recommend the County Council to take any
action in the matter.
School
Managers.
93. The triennial appointment of this Council's representatives
on the Bodies of Managers of Provided and
Non-provided Schools in the Borough took place
in November, 1910, the appointments being for the three years
ending December, 1913. The question of applying to the appointments
conditions as to the attendances of Managers and visits to
Schools was considered, but the Council did not think it expedient
to adopt such conditions.
