widening at St. Barnabas Terrace, subject to the Borough Council
agreeing to contribute one-third of the nett cost of the widening
by the County Council of Wimbledon Park Road, between St.
Michael's Church and Standen Road. The Borough Council did
not, however, see its way to agree to this condition, as the latter
improvement was only necessary in the event of tramways being
constructed there, and the Borough Council was of opinion that
Merton Road was the more suitable route for such tramways.
The County Council was not asked to contribute towards the cost
of the widening at Burr Terrace.
Mitcham Boad
Widening.
66. Proposals made to the Borough Council with regard to the
sale of the two pieces of surplus land in Mitcham Road,
Tooting, acquired in connection with the widening
of that road, were dealt with by the London County Council as
that Council is contributing two-thirds of the cost of the improvement.
The County Council was not, however, able to bring the
negotiations to a successful conclusion, and the land is still in
hand.
Putney to
Wandsworth
Tramways.
67. Under the London County Council (Tramways and
Improvements) Act, 1910, the County Council
obtained powers to construct tramways along High
Street, Putney, Putney Bridge Road, and High Street, Wandsworth,
to connect the existing tramways at Putney with those
in York Road, Wandsworth. The overhead system of traction
will be adopted in High Street, Putney, and in Putney Bridge Road,
the remainder of the route being worked on the underground
conduit system. Owing to the extensive widenings which will be
necessary in High Street, Wandsworth, the County Council decided
to proceed first with the construction of the part of the line between
Putney Bridge and the southern end of Putney Bridge Road.
The approval of the Board of Trade was obtained to the
proposals with regard to this section, and the works are now
in hand. With the exception of the part of the road by the
railway bridge near Point Pleasant, the tramway tracks will be
paved with wood, the Borough Council agreeing to pave the
remainder of the carriage-way with wood within two years of the
completion of the works executed by the County Council.
