Report of the Medical Officer of Health. 151
In Clapham, 21 bodies were removed to the Mortuary, compared
with 38 in 1909; in Streatham 56, compared with 55; and
in Wandsworth 109, of which 60 were from Wandsworth, 33 from
Putney, and 16 from Tooting-—a total of 186, compared with 206
in 1909.
General Sanitary Work in 1910.
The following list shows the special inspections made by me
during the year :—
(1.) In consequence of several complaints of flooding from the
River Wandle, special inspections were made on several occasions
during the year of the whole course of the River from
the Borough boundary to the River Thames, but it was
found that only at one part of the River was there any flooding
of occupied houses, viz. : in Lydden Grove. The attention
of the owners was called to the matter, and the London
County Council was also informed, but owing to the absence
of heavy rainfall the flooding did not recur. If the flooding
does recur it will be necessary for the owners to construct a
proper retaining wall.
(2.) As in previous years, special inspections were made of
several localities in consequence of complaints of smells from
road gullies and sewer ventilators.
The number of complaints was greater than in the previous
year, especially in Wandsworth ; this having been due
to the fact that the climatic conditions were favourable.
In all 117 complaints were received, compared with 79
in 1909: six from Clapham North, five from Clapham South,
22 from Putney, 18 from Streatham, 16 from Balham, 15
from Tooting, 21 from Southfield, and 14 from Springfield
Wards.
