Report of the Medical Officer of Health. 9
This has entailed a considerable amount of clerical work, as
m addition to keeping a Register of the births notified, a copy
has to be sent to the London County Council each week. So far
as can be ascertained at present little advantage has resulted from
the Act, as a very large proportion of the births are not notified,
and many of these are cases which would benefit by a visit from
the Council's Inspector.
I am of opinion that if registration of the births were made
compulsory within seven days much greater good would result,
and the present duplicate system could then be abolished.
The following Table shows the number of cases notified in
each district and in the whole Borough, the person by whom
notified, and whether the children were born alive or dead.

172 births were notified from the Workhouse, of which 122
belonged to this Borough and 50 to other places.
The next Table shows these births compared with the total
births registered in each sub-district and in the whole Borough.
