have also been taken with the view of an improvement being
effected at the corner of Tooting Bee Road and Mitcham Lane.
The London County Council has agreed to contribute one-half
the nett cost of these widenings.
Roe Bridge
Widening.
75. The roadway on each side of the County Bridge (Roe
Bridge) carrying Mitcham Lane, Streatham, over
the River Graveney having been widened, the
Borough Council asked the London County Council to take the
necessary steps with the view of the bridge being made of a
similar width to that of the road adjoining. The London County
Council has informed the Council that the widening of the bridge
to 50 feet, at an estimated cost of £750, has been authorised, that
the Surrey County Council has agreed to contribute one-half the
nett cost, but that the work could not be put in hand until the
levels of the widened road on the southern side of the bridge had
been made to conform with the proposed levels of the new bridge.
Mitcham Lane
and Southcroft
Boad
Tramways.
76. The County Council having obtained powers under the
London County Council (Tramways and Improvements)
Act, 1909, to construct tramways from
Mitcham Road, Tooting, via Southcroft Road and
Mitcham Lane, to Streatham High Road, submitted to the Board
of Trade and the Borough Council plans and particulars of the
system of traction (underground conduit) proposed to be adopted.
The Borough Council approved of the proposal, subject to the
usual conditions, and to the tramway tracks and margins
being paved with wood, and an agreement, similar to that
with regard to the Cedars Road tramways, was entered
into, under which the County Council is to execute this work
when the tramways are laid, and the Borough Council is to pave
the remainder of the carriageways with wood within two years
from the date of the agreement (5th May, 1910). A portion of
Southcroft Road has not yet been adopted as a parish road, and
when it is sufficiently built upon it will be paved as a new street at
the cost of the owners of property abutting thereon. The Board of
Trade consented to the system of traction, subject to the abovementioned
agreement, and the tramways works are now in progress.
The London County Council is also taking steps for
effecting the necessary widening of Mitcham Lane in connection,
with the construction of these tramways.
