and a resolution was passed to the effect that it was desirable that
a closer connection should be established between such Councils
and the schools in their respective localities, and urging the
London County Council to delegate to the City and Borough
Councils greater powers in the management of the schools. The
Council wrote to the County Council in support of the resolution,
and was informed in reply that it was considered that ample
opportunity for Managers to assist the cause of education might
be found in the duties assigned to Managers, and that the Committee
of the County Council shared the desire to secure the
interest of Managers in the schools, but were unable to agree in

71. The deputation appointed by the London County Council
to wait upon the Prime Minister in favour of the
establishment of a Traffic Board upon the lines indicated
in the report of the Royal Commission on London Traffic
was received by the Prime Minister on the 26th November, 1908.
In reply to the representations made by the deputation, the Prime
Minister stated that there were strong prima facie objections to
the creation of any new authority for London, but he promised
that H.M. Government would give the matter very careful
consideration.

72. The attention of the Council having been called to the
danger to the public arising from fast motor traffic
through Putney, the Council asked the London
County Council to apply to the Local Government Board for a
regulation to be made prohibiting the driving of motor cars at
a speed exceeding 10 miles per hour in High Street, Putney,
between Putney Bridge and the south side of Upper Richmond
Road. The County Council declined to make the suggested application,
but decided to erect four sign posts in suitable positions
near the intersection of High Street and Putney Hill at Upper
Richmond Road, in addition to the warning notices and signs
already placed there by the Borough Council and the Automobile
Association.
