and the standard price for gas 3s. 3d. per 1,000 cubic feet, and
that 14 candles shall be substituted for 16 as the standard illuminating-
power. Clause 39 of the scheme for the amalgamation
of the company with the London Gas Light Company in 1883 provided
that the company should not charge for gas in the districts
of the London Gas Light Company south of the Thames a higher
price than the price for the time being charged by the South Metropolitan
Gas Company for gas of the same illuminating power.
The Council petitioned against the Bill with the view of obtaining
the insertion of a clause providing that the company shall not
charge in their southern district a higher price than that charged
by the South Metropolitan Company. The company having
agreed to the insertion of such a clause the Council withdrew its
opposition to the Bill, which was passed on the 16th August, 1909.
48. This Bill was promoted by riparian owners on the River
Wandle with a view to checking the reduction of
spring-water by pumping operations by the Croydon
Corporation. This Council petitioned in favour of the Bill,
and authorized the Medical Officer of Health and Borough Engineer
to give evidence in support thereof. The Bill, as passed,
provides that the Croydon Corporation shall not sink any well
upon, or construct any works for taking or intercepting water
from any lands, if such taking or intercepting materially diminishes
the flow of water in the Wandle, unless the works and lands
upon which the same are to be constructed are specified in an Act
or Order confirmed by Parliament; that the Corporation shall not
abstract from the Waddon wells more than 50 million gallons of
water in every period of 30 days, except so far as they may be
hereafter authorized by Parliament, and that they shall keep daily
records of the water pumped at Waddon wells.
