give its consent to the tramways, and to the reduction, where
necessary, in the width of the footways, and would contribute onethird
of the nett cost (estimated at £59,250) of the necessary
street widenings. In reply the County Council was informed that
the Borough Council was of opinion that, in view of the proposed
construction of the tramways, the widening of the thoroughfare
from Lambeth to Putney advocated by the Royal Commission on
London Traffic as an arterial street improvement—the only such
improvement recommended south of the Thames—should be
carried out at once, and a double line of tramways constructed in
High Street, Wandsworth, in lieu of the loop lines proposed by
the County Council; that the construction of a single line of
electric tramway in Fairfield Street and High Street would
render those thoroughfares very dangerous, the awkward curves
at the junction of the roads in the proposed loop line from High
Street along Fairfield Street and York Road back to High Street
being also very objectionable, and the Borough Council suggested
that from High Street, Wandsworth, a double line of tramways
should be laid along Putney Bridge Road to High Street, Putney,
and thence to Putney Bridge in lieu of the proposed line along
Upper Richmond Road, and that Putney Bridge Road should be
widened where necessary for the purpose. The Borough Council
also submitted to the County Council an alternative plan for the
widening of East Hill. Having further considered the matter the
Highways Committee of the County Council decided not to proceed
with the proposals at present, but expressed the opinon that
in view of the importance of the lines in connection with the
development of the existing tramways system with which they
would be connected, arrangements should be made for their construction
as soon as the County Council was in a position to deal
with the matter.

traction of the tramways in Wandsworth Road,
Lavender Hill, St. John's Hill, and East Hill, the
London County Council informed the Borough
Council in July last, that, owing to the additional street widenings
asked for by the Wandsworth and Battersea Borough
Councils, the clauses relating to the matter had to be withdrawn
from the County Council's Tramways and Improvements Bill of
the present Session, that the Highways Committee of the County
