Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
Under the head of other workshops are included domestic
workshops, and under the head of places where food is prepared
for sale are included the kitchens of hotels, restaurants, tripe,
fried fish and eel shops, and other places where food is prepared
for sale.
There was a marked increase in the number of inspections of
factories during the year, especially of factory laundries and other
factories. In all 658 inspections were made of 253 factories and
69 notices, all of these being intimation notices, were served. It
is satisfactory to note that no statutory notices were necessary
during the year.
The total number of workshops on the Register was 1,719,
119 of which were workshop laundries, 161 workshop bakehouses,
and 1,439 other workshops.
In all 3,233 inspections of these were made, compared with
2,628 in 1905, and 238 intimation and 19 statutory notices were
served.
The total number of workplaces on the Register was 891, and
1,863 inspections were made, while 119 intimation and seven statutory
notices were served.
The total number of defects found during the year was 558,
including 19 cases in which there was a breach of special sanitary
requirements for bakehouses.
To abate these nuisances 399 intimation and 28 statutory
notices were served, all of which, with the exception of 12, were
complied with. These 12 notices were served in the latter part of
December and were complied with in the early part of the current
year.
In all 558 defects were found and 537 remedied, but it was
only necessary to serve 399 intimation notices, as one notice frequently
called atention to several defects on the same premises.
In the case of the statutory notices served intimation notices had
previously been served.
