Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
The Committee recommended that the Council agree with the
foregoing resolutions except that the number of tins opened should
not be so great as one per cent., and that communications be
addressed to the Local Government Board, the Board of Agriculture,
and the London County Council in support thereof.
Factories and Workshops.
I am able to report that there has been a considerable increase
in the amount of work done by the Inspectors during the year,
and that, on the whole, the condition of all the workshops in the
Borough is most satisfactory. With the exception of the work in
regard to outworkers no difficulties have been noted, and the
difficulty with regard to outworkers has been largely due to the
great lessening of the amount of work done by these outworkers,
owing either to a decline in trade, or that work is more generally
being carried out in large factories or workshops, or to both these
factors combined.
The Tables which follow are similar to those used in previous
Reports, and the whole of the work done by both the male and
female Inspectors is there summarised in a concise form.
The total number of workshops on the Register was 1,719,
including 161 retail bakehouses, 119 workshop laundries, 293
domestic workshops and 1,146 other workshops, but not including
253 factories, 891 workplaces, and 233 outworkers' premises.
Including all factories, workshops, workplaces, and outworkers'
premises, there were on the Register at the end of 1906,
3,096 premises, compared with 3,045 in 1905, 2,987 in 1904, and
2,676 in 1903.
The total number of inspections made during the year was
5,997, compared with 4,933 in 1905, and 4,946 in 1904.
The total number of notices served was 427, 399 intimation
and 28 statutory, compared with 462 in 1905, and 465 in 1904.
There were two prosecutions, one for failing to cleanse a
workshop and the other for sanitary defects, and in both fines
-were inflicted.
