REPORT OF THE PUTNEY LIBRARY SUB-COMMITTEE,
For the Year ended March 31st, 1907.
The Sub-Committee in submitting the Nineteenth Annual Report
of the Putney Library are again pleased to record a considerable
growth in the various branches of its work.
In December, 1906, the Borough Council appointed Alderman
Parker, Councillors Hoile, Jackson and Radford as the Sub-Committee
for 1907. At the first meeting of the Sub-Committee Alderman
Parker was elected Chairman for the year.
The issue of the Quarterly List of additions to the Library has
been continued; this publication has, doubtless, been helpful to the
many readers.
The question of further protection of the Library from fire has
been discussed, and as a means to this end, extra lengths of fire hose
have been purchased at a cost of £3 16s.
The Finance Committee passed estimates of expenditure
amounting to ,£1,103, and during the year this sum has been
expended.
The Sub-Committee regret to report the death of the Rev.
Stephen Todd, who was for many years intimately connected with the
management of the institution, and they desire to place on record
their appreciation of his devoted services.
Owing to very heavy rain storms during the early part of the
summer the basement of the building was flooded.
During the period under review the following works were carried
out under the supervision of the Surveyor:—The decoration of the
main corridor, news room and lending department, works for the
prevention of a recurrence of the floods in the basement, and
the provision of a set of stone steps for better exit from the basement.
These improvements were made at a cost of £76.
