The illegitimate births numbered 34 ; 18 males and 16 females.
During the year the births notified under the Notification of
Births Act have been compared with the births registered by the
Registrar of Births, and the respective figures are 821 and 937.
MORTALITY.
General Mortality.—There were 392 deaths of residents registered
in the Borough, and 287 of residents who died in Public
Institutions outside of the Borough, making a total of 679 deaths.

Of these 348 were of females, and 331 were of males.

The recorded general death.rate is therefore 129, as against
11.5for the preceding year.
The liberal relief which is being granted throughout a period
of great industrial depression is the chief factor—more especially
by maintaining the food supply of those who are out of work—in
securing the favourable state of the public health, whatever its
other effects may be upon the economic life of the community.
THE CAUSES OF DEATH.—These are fully set forth
in Table I., in which it will be noted that the deaths are also apportioned
to different age periods.
