Wightman Road. Church Road, Highgate, and Coldfall School
Clinic. One of the conditions upon which the Council's Midwife
accepts a case is that the expectant mother shall attend an antenatal
clinic.
A reduction of her fee was made in 43 necessitous cases.
1,926 births have been attended by the Borough Midwife since
the appointment was first made in 1922.
MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE.
NEW MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE CENTRE.
The Council's Maternity and Child Welfare services have
been carried on successfully on the same lines as in previous
years. The only change is the transfer of the Welfare Centre
from the Mission Hall in Brook Road, Campsbourne, to a new
Centre, built as a first floor on the School Clinic at the rear of
the Town Hall, Crouch End. The building was completed at
the end of 1936, but was not opened until March 1st, 1937.
The Minister of Health, the Rt. Hon. Sir Kingsley Wood,
P.C., M.P., was unfortunately prevented at the last moment
from carrying out his promise to open the new Centre, but Sir
Arthur MacNalty, Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health,
performed the ceremony in a speech which congratulated Hornsey
on its excellent record in the past, and directed attention to the
importance of safeguarding the health and physical development
of the " toddler."
The work of this new Centre since March 1st, 1937, is not
strictly matter for recording in the present Report, which deals
with the year 1936. However, as there was doubt in the minds
of a few people as to the wisdom of transferring the Centre from
Campsbourne to Crouch End, I am glad to be able to report that
already, within a few months of opening, the new Centre is doing
considerably more work than the old. There has been no falling
off in attendance of mothers with their children from the Campsbourne
area and there has been a great increase from the Crouch
End district.
