from 25 at the time of the 1901 census to 32.1 at the middle of
1909. At the middle of 1908 the density was 31.5 persons per
acre.
North Haringey remains much the most thickly-populated
ward, with 80 persons per acre, though East and West Hornsey
are gradually creeping up near this figure. Crouch End, with 15
persons per acre, is at the other extreme.
Muswell Hill, in spite of its rapid growth, has still only 19
persons per acre, and Highgate 18.

Births .—The number of births recorded during 1909 was
1,508. This is an increase of 23 over the number of births registered
in 1908. In the preceding twelve months (1908, compared
with 1907) there was a decrease of 39 in the recorded births.
Twenty-seven of the births were illegitimate (25 in 1908).
Ten of the births occurred at the Edmonton Workhouse, but
no other births belonging to the Borough are recorded as occurring
in Public Institutions.
The birth-rate for the year was 16.3, exactly the same as in
1908. The accompanying chart shews that in 1884 the birth-rate
was over 33 per 1,000 of the population. Now it is less than half
