the mortality from the disease was, in fact, less than in many
years when the disease was less prevalent.
The extreme mildness of many of the cases was, indeed, the
chief factor in the spread of the disease. Cases frequently
occurred where, owing to the slight illness in the primary case,
several other persons had been infected before the nature of the
disease was recognized, and consequently no steps towards prevention
had been taken.
