REPORT
on the
SANITARY CONDITION OF SAINT MARY, ISLINGTON,
FOR DECEMBER, 1860.
No. XLV.
Three hundred and eight deaths were registered in the five weeks
ending December 29th; a number which is but little in excess of the
wn-corrected mean of the four previous years, viz.: 300, and would
doubtless be considerably below the average if this were corrected for
increased population. The deaths in December last year were 320,
and in the previous year 364. The influence of the severe frost which
set in on the 18th and continued to the end of the month will probably be
perceived in the mortuary table for January.*
Twelve deaths from scarlet fever, 15 from hooping cough, and
9 from fever, have been registered, all of which are considerably in
excess of last month. The zymotic deaths, however, taken as a class,
have not exceeded the uncorrected mean for December.
*The mean temp. (Greenwich) of the 4th week of the month was 32.1° or
7.2 degrees below the average of 43 years, and of the 5th week 25.9° or 11 degrees
below the average. On Christmas Day the thermometer fell to 8° and on the 29th
to 10°.
