1908]
The samples examined during these years were very varied, and included 8
different kinds of dairy produce and oleaginous foods, 47 different kinds of
groceries, 9 different kinds of alcoholic beverages, and 59 different kinds of
drugs.
The results of the analyses are very interesting, because they show that
only a comparatively small number of articles are adulterated.
Thus, of oleaginous foods it was found that only 1 sample of dripping out
of 64 examined was adulterated, and 2 samples of lard out of 135.
Of groceries, out of 85 samples of bread examined, none was adulterated,
while the same has to be said of 6 chicories, 6 cinnamons, 109 corn-flours, 10
honeys, 31 jams, 15 lime juices, 8 meat extracts, 10 preserved
mushrooms, 30 pea flours, 3 tinned or bottled peas, 73 black peppers, 33
pickles, 14 salad oils, 6 soda waters, 14 sugars (other than demerara), and 50
teas. Again, there was only 1 sample adulterated in 80 white peppers
examined, in 62 arrowroots, in 65 ground gingers and in 41 sweets and confections.
Also only 2 samples were adulterated in 10 golden syrups, in 142
mustards, and 34 yeasts.
Of the alcoholic beverages, out of 41 beers, ales, and porters, none was adulterated,
while the same must be said of 5 samples of wine.
Among the 59 different kinds of drugs, of which 719 were examined, no less
than 613 were returned as genuine.
There is a long list of different drugs, 31 in number, of which none was
adulterated, while only 1 sample of acetic acid out of 22 examined was returned
as not genuine, while the same return was made with respect to 17 castor oils.
The full list of all the articles examined, together with the number of each
returned as adulterated, not up to standard, or sold contrary to the provisions
of the Adulteration Acts, is as below:—
