INSPECTION OF HOUSES LET IN LODGINGS.
As explained in the Report of the Medical Officer of Health for 1907,
there is no provision in the by-laws for the keeping of a register because every
house, which is let in lodgings or is occupied by the members of more than
one family, and which does not come within the scope of the exemption
clauses, is subject to them.
There is, however, a number of houses, altogether some 900, which are
systematically inspected and visited, either because they are neglected by their
owners, or by reason of the class of tenants, such as those occupying houses
in Campbell Road and Queensland Road, occupying them. These houses are
regularly inspected by two Inspectors (Messrs. Ward and Hancock), who
together made 10,782 inspections and visits to them, and served 1,120 intimation
notices and 159 statutory notices on the persons responsible for abating the
2,662 nuisances which were discovered.
It must be noted that in the first quarter Inspector Bridel inspected the
northern district, at the end of which time he was succeeded by Inspector
Ward, who had been performing the duties of an Inspector under the Sale of
Food and Drugs Acts, and who in turn was succeeded by Inspector Burrell, while
Inspector Bridel undertook the duty in the district vacated by the last-named
Inspector.
