Sanitary improvements.—During the year I have served 232 notices for the abatement
of nuisances, 293 workshops have been cleansed and lime-whited, 9 w.c.'s have been provided
for men at various workshops, whilst 509 other improvements were carried out under my
supervision. Also 43 workroom cards were distributed showing the cubic capacity and the
number of employees allowed to work in each workroom. 29 water supplies were also
provided.
Bakehouses.—I have paid 572 visits to bakehouses, and am pleased to find the improvement
is still kept up in respect to their cleanliness, although at times there is a tendency to
use the bakehouse to dry or air the linen; when found, I have reported to you, and caused
letters to be sent remonstrating with the occupiers for doing so. I may also mention that
on my last visit 200 bakehouses were in use, and 55 empty or not in use.
I have also reported through you to H.M. Inspector of Factories, as required by
Section 27 of the Public Health Act, 1891, the addresses of 15 workshops where young
persons under the age of 18 years were employed, and where the abstract of the Factory
Act was not affixed.
Register.—During the year, 58 workshops, containing 108 workrooms, have been
measured and added to the Register, whilst 53 workshops, containing 93 workrooms, have
been removed. I may also mention that 91 workshops, containing 179 workrooms, have been
notified by Miss Brown to me as employing both sexes, so that at the present time there are
954 workshops, containing 1,455 workrooms, and 65 outworkers' premises now on the register.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
GEORGE WEST,
Sanitary Inspector of Workshops, etc.
