BACTERiOLOGiCAL EXAMiNATiONS.
During the year 5-i5 specimens were examined for the purpose of diagnosing
Diphtheria, Enteric Fever and Phthisis for the medical profession who
practise in islington. This was the largest number hitherto examined in one
year, the preceding largest return having been 47i in i907.
Of these specimens 28i related to Diphtheria, 59 to Enteric Fever, and 205
to Phthisis.
Diphtheria.—The 28i specimens forwarded for examination was the
largest number hitherto received. in 93 instances positive results were
obtained, and in i88 negative.
Enteric Fever.—The specimens of the blood of 59 patients were
examined, of which 34 resulted in the diagnosis of the disease, and 25 gave
negative results.
Phthisis.—The sputum of 205 patients was examined, in 69 of which
tubercle bacilli were recognised.
The above examinations, made on behalf of the Council by the Lister
institute, bring up the number of specimens examined since i898 to 3,674, of
which i,507 were made for the diagnosis of Diphtheria, 780 for Enteric Fever,
and i,387 for Phthisis.
