1908]
45th year had been reached, for the returns show that between the ages of
45 and 55, 22 deaths occurred; between 55-65, 67 deaths; between 65-75,
98 deaths; between 75-85, 76 deaths, and above 85 years 20.
Pneumonia.—426 deaths were registered from pneumonia, or 131 less
than in the preceding year. They were equal to a death-rate of 1 20 per 1,000
of the population. 64 of the deaths occurred in public institutions. The
decrease in the mortality must no doubt be attributed to the mildness of the
year, which of course had a very considerable effect on infantile mortality.
Thus there were only 106 deaths under 1 year of age, as against 153 in the
preceding year, and 82 between 1 and 5 years, as contrasted with 125 in 1907.
Similar reductions are noticeable at the other ages.
Pleurisy caused 27 deaths, all of which with two exceptions had reached
the fifth year of life, for 2 were under 5, 1 under 15; 2 were betweed 15 and
25; 3 were between 25 and 35; 7 were between 35 and 55, and 12 between 55
and 85.
Asthma and Emphysema caused 19 deaths, 10 males and 9 females.
Other Diseases of the Respiratory System were responsible for 17
deaths.

The following particulars are of interest respecting the deaths of infants under one year old:—

Acute Bronchitis.Pneumonia.Total.

ALCOHOLISM.
Compared with the preceding year, the deaths from alcoholism showed a
decrease of 11, the number registered being 17, as compared with 28.
During the preceding 7 years there had been an average of 26 deaths from
this cause.
The return, although satisfactory. is not as low as that of 1906, when only
16 deaths were recorded. The decrease seems to have occurred amongst the
chronic cases, for only 14 were registered as against 24 in the preceding year.
