TYPHUS FEVER.
No death was recorded during the year, which was the tenth in succession
in which there has been none. In the last twenty-four years only 12 deaths
altogether have been registered, and these were distributed over eight years,
thus leaving Islington for sixteen years absolutely free from the disease. Vide
Table XXIX for a statement of the mortality since 1885.
CONTINUED FEVER.
Nil return.
DIARRHGEAL DISEASES.
The return from Diarrhœa, like the returns from the other epidemic diseases,
has been satisfactory, only 117 deaths having been registered during the year,
as compared with a corrected annual average for 20 years of 189. They
thus showed a decrease of 72 on that period.
When the present return is compared with the quinquennial periods, it is
more clearly seen how satisfactory it is. Thus in 1886-1890 the deaths averaged
230 per annum ; 1891-1895, 173; 1896-1900, 230; 1901-1905, 169; and in the
three years 1906-1908, 177.
Although the return is so good, it is not, however, so good as that of 1907.
when 103 deaths were registered, or of 1902, when 99 were registered, or of
1894, when there were 95. Nevertheless it was exceedingly good.
In the first quarter of the year 12 deaths were registered, or 30 above the
average of the preceding 20 years in that period of the year.
In the second quarter only 3 deaths were registered, as compared with an
average of 15 in the corresponding quarter of the period just mentioned.
In the third quarter 72 deaths were known, as compared with an average
of 164 in the preceding 20 similar quarters, and in the fourth quarter 30 deaths
were registered, as compared with an average of 23.
It is interesting to note that of the 117 deaths no less than 80 occurred
amongst infants under 12 months old, and of these 19 died before they had
reached the end of their third month; 8 died while in their third month;
8 in their fourth month; 8 in their fifth month; 8 in their sixth month; 12 in
their seventh month; 3 in their eighth month; 4 in their ninth month; 1 in
their tenth month, and 9 in their eleventh month.
