Ages at Death.—The returns showing the ages of the persons who have
died have been examined to ascertain the periods of life at which the deaths
were in excess of those of last year, with the result that it is found that among
children under five years of age there was an increase in the mortality in 1913
of 215, of which 188 were infants under a year old; in that between 5 and
15 it was 26; between 15 and 25, 23; between 35 and 45, 29; between 45 and
55, 59; between 65 and 75, 24; between 75 and 85, 4; and above 85 it was 14.

There were, therefore, 8 age-periods at which the deaths showed a joint increase of 394, and two at which they exhibited a decrease of 48, namely, between 25 and 35 of 18, and between 55 and 65 of 30, leaving a net increase of 346.

In this statement the largest increases are seen to have occurred at the
earliest periods of life. The year 1912 was, however, the most favourable
which the borough has experienced in its long history, and it was
not to be expected that its good fortune would continue, and consequently
these increased deaths are only of passing moment.
When, however, the figures for the year under discussion are compared
with those of the preceding ten years, 1903-1912, it is found that the deaths
of infants were 71 below the average, and of young children (1-5 years) 74
below it, making a total of 145.

In the following statement a contrast is made between the deaths in 1913 and the average numbers for the years 1903-1912.
