DEATHS.
The mortality returns gave 5,028 deaths as properly belonging to the
borough of Islington, which means they include many deaths which until two
years ago were credited to the localities in which the persons died, and
wherein they had resided for some time. Indeed, in some instances
inquiries, made at the supposed former addresses of some of the deceased
persons, and even in their neighbourhood, failed to elicit any information
respecting them. Nevertheless the Somerset House officials insisted on their
inclusion in the Islington returns, because the deceased had given their
addresses here at the time of their entry into the institution wherein they had
died, which, in some cases, occurred many years ago.
The returns also include the deaths of all persons who had died in public
institutions outside the borough, to which they had gone for treatment or to
die Thus it is apparent that the mortality returns are something more than
exact.
The 5,028 deaths were equal to a death-rate of 15.15 per 1,000 of the
estimated population, which is 0.81 per 1,000 higher than the rate of the
preceding year. It contrasts also with a death-rate of 14.2 for the County
of London, with 13.4 for England and Wales, and with a mean rate of 14.7
for the boroughs which encircle Islington.
It was pointed out in the earlier part of this report, as well as in several
reports of previous years, that the manner in which the ages of the
population are distributed has a considerable influence on the deathrate,
as has also the distribution of the sexes. The Registrar-General has,
therefore, prepared factors by which these recorded death-rates can be
standardized so as to make the death-rates of various places comparable with
that of England and Wales, which is the basis of his calculation, and with
each other. These he calls "factors for correction," and that for Islington is
0.9749; and therefore the "corrected" death rate for Islington is 14.77. It
is, therefore, possible to compare one borough with another with some exactitude,
and this is the result.
