From these figures we see that there was a steady upward tendency
through these years, which was noticeable, not only among males, but also
among females; for whereas in 1891 the deaths of males numbered only 74,
in 1912 they were 160. In a similar manner the deaths of females, which
were 144 in 1891, were as many as 222 in 1912. These figures represent an
increased mortality of 116 per cent. among males, and 54 per cent. among
females.
Ages at Death.—In the statement which follows, it will be seen that
while there were comparatively few deaths from the disease up to the age of
25 years, yet after that period they increased rapidly, so that among persons
25-35 years old, there were 7 deaths. During the next ten years, 35-45, there
were 25; in the next decade there was an enormous increase, as the number
rose nearly threefold, being 71, while in the following ten years of life, 55-65,
they were almost double those of the preceding period of life, being 130; then
they gradually decreased to 86, 51 and 5 in the several decennial periods
between 65 to 95 years of age.
It is difficult to explain the largely increased number of deaths between
55 and 65, for while the average for the ten years had been 98, they increased
to 130 in 1912. Of these 130 deaths 60 were those of males and 70 of females,
as contrasted with 46 and 46 respectively in the preceding year. This shows
that there was an increased mortality at this period of life, both among males
and females, and, indeed, the death-rate among each sex was nearly equal,
being 5.9 per 1,000 among males, and 5.8 per 1,000 among females, living at
this time of life.

The particulars of the death-rate at the several age periods among males and females are set out in Table LIX.
