was 54.9 per 1,000 births. The mortality among legitimate
infants was 45.5 per 1,000; that of illegitimate 115.9. The infant
mortality rate for London was 57.
The number of infants dying under 1 year was 57, a decrease of 3 on
the figure of last year. The chief contributory causes of death were
want of attention at birth, congenital defects, prematurity, bronchopneumonia,
and affections of the stomach and bowels.
