As shown in Table II, 1,551 notifications of births were received by
the department for 1936 as compared with 1,537 in 1935. Of the total
notifications, 1,149 were sent by midwives, of whom 30 were practising
in the City during 1936.
The following table shows the number of male and female children
born since 1920, and those who did not survive the first year of life, with
the number of the surviving children at the end of the first year of life :—

The results again demonstrate the universal truth that girl babies
maintain greater hardiness than boys. Although the number of boys
born exceeded that of girls by 9, at the end of the year the numbers were
almost equal.
