The numbers in brackets are registrations under the Legitimacy Act, and cannot be
classified as births.
The numbers of registered and notified births show a slight increase over
the figures for 1935, but on the other hand, the number of deaths is greater
so that the gap between the deaths in the City as compared with the
births is greater than in 1935. This gap has been gradually increasing
from 1924 when the deaths exceeded the births by 71 to the present
year, when the excess is 414. Whilst the birth rate is considerably below
that for London and the Country, the death rate, although overlapping
the births, is below the rate for London and that of the country.
