These figures show the amount of sulphur tri-oxide, in milligrammes,
formed on a piece of fabric 100 square centimetres in area, per day, due to
the active sulphurous impurities in the atmosphere. The average for
the year seems greatest at the City Hall.
Batter sea Power Station.—In December, the Council received a communication
from the Electricity Commissioners intimating that application
had been made to them by the London Power Company, Limited, for
consent to the extension of the generating plant at this Power Station.
It was stated that the application was supported by the Central Electricity
Board, whose programme for plant development would require the
proposed extension at Batteresa to be available by 1940.
The London County Council, as one of the authorities interested in
the proposal, at the instigation of the City Council, suggested that a
conference of officers of the County Council and the other authorities
concerned should be held to consider the application and report to their
respective councils. The City Council agreed and authorised certain
officers to attend the proposed conference to be held early in 1937.
INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
The inspection of food and of premises where foodstuffs are stored
or sold receives constant attention. One thousand eight hundred and
seventeen samples of various foods and drugs were purchased for analysis,
while 3,806 visits were paid to premises where food is sold, stored, or otherwise
handled, for the purpose of observing the condition of food and
premises, cleanliness, and methods of handling. Notices numbering 324
were served in respect of various defects, mainly lack of proper
cleanliness. In addition, foods sold at Charity " Markets " and Bazaars
have been the subject of inspection.
