The numbers in brackets are registrations under the Legitimacy Act, and rannot be
classified as births.
This is the lowest birth rate yet recorded in the City of Westminster.
The death rate has been higher than the birth rate since 1924, but this
year the difference is more pronounced. This may not be of great local
significance as Westminster is regarded as a central and administrative
area, but the tendency has now spread to the country generally. Recent
returns show a considerable excess of deaths over births, a state of affairs
which cannot be viewed with complacency, especially if the gap between
the two increases as the years pass by.
