The number of hours of sunshine during the year was 2.5 per cent,
more than the average. July, with 280.1 hours, was the only
outstanding month as regards sunshine, but no month was exceptionally
sunless, the two wettest months having almost as much as the average.
The year was wetter than usual, the total rainfall being 32.12 in.
(average for past 80 years—28.52 in.). April, September and November
were unusually wet months, while March (0.63 in.) and July (0.96 in.)
were the two driest.
There was no exceptionally hot weather, but towards the end of
October there were some remarkable variations in temperature (e.g.—28i
degrees F. in minimum night temperature in 7 days). During
December the combination at times of sun, frost and snow gave the
weather an Alpine character, but fog was prevalent at Christmas time.
The highest screen temperature recorded during the year at
Rothamsted was 84 degrees F., and the lowest 13.4 degrees F.
Gales were unusually frequent and severe during October, November
and December.
Births.
The births registered in Westminster during 1935 numbered 1,527
but of these the homes of 937 were in other districts, 7 were either
registered under the Legitimacy Act or were re-registrations, and have
therefore to be deducted from the total. There were, however, 459
children belonging to Westminster parents born in institutions outside
the City, and these must be added. This gives a net total of 1,042, which
is 124 less than the corresponding figure for 1934. The Birth Rate for
the City was 8.3, for London 13.3 and for England and Wales 14.7.
The comparative net totals of the registered births for the last three
years are
