In addition to the above, 110 families were rehoused on the
Tachbrook Estate by the Westminster Housing Trust, Ltd.
Overcrowding.— During the year 51 new cases of overcrowding were
discovered. By means of the housing schemes of the City Council
and of the London County Council and other bodies some 94 cases of
overcrowding were relieved.
Maintenance of Dwelling Houses in a fit Condition.— A circular was
received from the Ministry of Health, explaining the importance of prompt
and continuous action by the local authorities to maintain houses in
a proper state of repair.
The Minister pointed out that any relaxation of effort by the local
authority would result in large numbers of persons living in unsatisfactory
housing conditions, and would possibly result in the creation of conditions
which would only be remedied by more stringent measures.
The City Council has always been alive to the necessity for the maintenance
in good repair of dwellings within its area and has usually found
owners ready and willing to co-operate in maintaining where possible
properties in a condition conforming to its requirements.
