Outworkers.—The total number of lists received during the year
amounted to 1,092.
Notices in respect of failure to send lists were sent to 104 firms. No
legal proceedings were necessary in respect of this offence.
The lists contained 10,679 names and addresses, of which 6,108 were
in other districts, 5,476 being within the Metropolitan area and 578 in the
London Suburban Districts.
The number of individual outworkers in the City at the close of the
year was 1,629, of whom 1,398 were registered as occupying workshops.
The number of houses in which outwork was being carried on was 797.
Smoke Abatement.
The Smoke Abatement Committee for Greater London appointed by
the Conference of Local Authorities, held at the Guildhall in 1927, continued
to hold meetings at the Ministry of Health during 1929. Your
Medical Officer of Health was one of three Medical Officers appointed as
representatives on the Committee.
At an early stage of the proceedings, the Committee issued an inquiry
of a very comprehensive nature to 119 local authorities requesting
information of the technical and administrative aspects of the smoke
problem. In reply, 69 authorities supplied full information to the 24
separate questions in the inquiry. It may be of interest to quote the
information returned by the City Council.

(i) steam-raising plants ?300 (approx.). Public buildings, theatres, clubs, hotels, etc.
(ii) furnaces connected therewith ?Do.
(iii) nature of fuel used ?Coal and oil.
(b) Number of chimneys connected with factories ?Very few.
