Infantile Mortality.— The corrected death-rate of infants for Westminster
was 77.37 per 1,000 births. The mortality among legitimate
infants was 69.7 per 1,000; that of illegitimate 131.7. The infant
mortality rate for London was 70.
The number of infants dying under 1 year was 105, an increase of 25 on
the figure of last year and as the total number of births shows a decrease
of 13, the infantile mortality rate unfortunately has risen. The chief
contributory causes of death were pneumonia, prematurity, gastroenteritis
and whooping cough. Twenty-four of the 27 premature deaths
occurred before the fourth week of life.
Gastro-enteritis accounted for 10 deaths, 6 of the infants being over
four months old. Six of those occurred during July, August, and
September, and might be attributed to what is commonly called
"summer diarrhœa."
Table VIII shows the deaths as they occurred during the four quarters of the last four years:— Table VIII.
