by accident and negligence. Among the females the causes showing an
increase were respiratory and circulatory diseases, influenza, cancer,
prematurity, cirrhosis, Bright's disease, accidents of parturition, and deaths
by accidents and negligence.
There were, however, more deaths from cancer : 111 among males
and 125 in females. The corresponding figures in 192G were 96 and 111.
Deaths from tuberculosis were decreased by 19. Diseases of the circulatory
system still stand at the head of all causes of death, with a total of
352 (186 males and 166 females), an increase on the number shown last
year (345, 179 males, 166 females). Under this category are included
deaths from apoplectic strokes, and by far the most cases occur in the
age period above 65 years. Deaths from valvular disease of the heart
have increased this year by more than a-half.
Influenza was prevalent in the early part of the year and took a higher
toll of elderly people. In 1926 the deaths over 45 years numbered 14.
In 1927 they numbered 49. Deaths from cancer also increased from 207
to 236, the increase being most pronounced among those over 65 years
of both sexes. Circulatory diseases caused the same number of deaths
among females as last year, but showed an increase among males. There
was a pronounced increase in the deaths from valvular disease of the heart
among the elderly of both sexes. Tuberculosis continues to decrease.
The deaths from tuberculosis of the lungs have fallen by approximately
20 per cent. as compared with 1926.
The distribution of deaths in the various wards of the City are
shown in the following table, and may be compared with the similar
figures during the four preceding years :—
