Of the total 944 samples of milk taken during the year, 32 were
obtained on Sundays. Of the latter, 2 were adulterated (1 per cent,
added water, 8-7 per cent, fat abstracted). The vendor of the sample
deficient in fat was prosecuted and fined £2.
Samples taken in course of delivery.—Seven samples were taken as the
milk was being delivered by consignors to hospitals, etc. On analysis
all were found to be genuine and of "good" quality.
Public Health (Preservatives in Food) Regulations, 1925, and
Public Health (Preservatives in Food) Amendment Regulations,
1926 and 1927.
These Regulations were discussed in detail in the reports for 1925
and 1926. They came into force at stated periods in 1927 as affecting
particular articles of food, and this enforcement by steps will be continued
in 1928, the final prohibition which has effect as from July lst)
1928, refers to butter containing a preservative for the purpose of
making certain articles of food. Butter used thus after this date must
not contain preservative. The other articles on which prohibitions were
gradually imposed and were in effect after 31st December, 1927, are
bacon, ham, egg yolk, butter and cream, margarine, whether used themselves
as food or used in the preparation of other food.
Only the following articles may contain preservative which must be
either sulphur dioxide or benzoic acid as specified in the regulations.
Sausage and sausage meat, fruit and fruit pulp not dried, dried fruit,
unfermented grape juice and non-alcoholic wines, cordials and fruit
juices, jam, candied peel, sugar, corn syrup, gelatine, beer, cider, alcoholic
wines, sweetened mineral waters, brewed ginger beer, coffee extract,
pickles and sauces made from fruit or vegetables. Twenty infringements
of these regulations were found as the result of analyses of samples.
A detailed list of samples is set out below, with notes as to analysis
and action taken.
