was almost an insurance against destitution in old age. Education
has evolved a higher social conscience in individuals, and parents are less
imbued with that primitive and selfish motive of self-preservation. They
endeavour to have a small family so that the coming generation may get
the best possible start in life and thus improve on the conditions in which
the parents began.
