There was an increase in the number of deaths in all the Wards
with the exception of St. Anne, Regent, Charing Cross and Strand.
Infantile Mortality.—The corrected death·rate of infants for Westminster
was 47•2 deaths per 1,000 births, the lowest rate which has ever
been reached. Had the mortality been the same now as in the 10
years 1892·1901, the deaths of infants would have been more than three
times as many. The mortality of legitimate infants was only 42·3 per
1,000; in the Pimlico area this rate was still lower, viz. 36•2 figures
which a few years ago would have been thought incredible. In the
St. John's and St. Margaret's area it was 49, and in the Northern
area 50.
The averages for legitimate infant deaths during the preceding three
years, 1920·21·22, was : Pimlico, 62*9 ; St. Margaret and St. John, 60·3 ;
Northern, 49·5; and for the whole City, 59·0.
Below are given figures for both births and deaths of infants corrected, distinguishing legitimate and illegitimate births, showing the rates for a series of years :—
