In addition, 204 bacteriological examinations of sputum were made
at the Council's expense for medical men who had 202 suspicious cases
under observation, and in 55 instances the bacillus was found. In some
instances medical men had this examination made by other than the
Council's Bacteriologist.
Treatment.—All the patients notified from common lodging-houses
or as homeless received institutional treatment of varying duration;
some of them did not go into the infirmary until within a short time of
their death, but many go in and out several times in the year, while
others are fairly permanent residents. Probably few of this class of
patient have any treatment while out of the infirmary.
Of the others, 212 of the 394 notified in 1913, or who died unnotified,
had institutional treatment of one kind or another.
Of other forms, 116 of the 179 cases which came under notice had
institutional treatment. 351 patients notified in previous years also
had institutional treatment during 1913, In addition, 68 of the
suspects had the benefit of a stay in convalescent homes or in hospital.
Institutional treatment was provided by the Insurance Committee
for 78, the City Council for 14, the St. Henry Fund for 20, Invalid
Children's Aid Association for 60, Charity Organisation Society for 7,
the Jewish Board of Guardians for 13, the Guardians and Metropolitan
Asylums Board for 184, employers, clergy, clubs, and friends
for 138, and by hospitals for 147.
An analysis has been made as to the treatment of persons over
15 years of age, with special reference to the effect of the Insurance Act
in relation to tuberculous patients, and certain tables have been prepared
dealing with 727 persons, of whom 324 are insured and 403 are not
insured. In the latter group are included only persons with incomes
within the limit of the Insurance standard. Soldiers (who are insured)
and inmates of common lodging-houses, shelters and homeless persons
are excluded.
