Other Forms of Tuberculosis.—Many of the patients had been ill for some years, and 43, were suffering previous to taking up residence in Westminster. The parts of the body effected were:—

Spine25Pleura2
Bones and joints46Bladder2
Glands46Skin9
Abdomen10General3
Meninges of brain9

There were 8 deaths from abdominal tuberculosis, 19 from meningeal
(all recent cases), and 15 from affections of other parts ; and 27 of these
had not been notified during life, making a total of 179 cases. There
will probably always be a proportion of these eases not notified, as
there is greater difficulty in deciding that the illness is due to tubercle.
Two of the lupus patients were temporarily resident in Westminster,
undergoing treatment.
Children under school age notified numbered 38; between 5 and 15, 55.
In 31 instances the parents, and in 7 other, relatives, were suffering
from tuberculosis. In one case the wife became tuberculous, the husband
having suffered from pulmonary trouble for some time previously.
Suspects and Contacts.—In visiting patients, it is of importance to
ascertain the names of all persons who have been exposed to infection
and to have these medically examined, but the Health Society visitors
frequently come across persons in bad health in families in which no
case has been notified, and if not already under medical supervision steps
are taken to have them examined. In this way 377 persons were
specially examined, and 30 were found to be suffering from pulmonary
tuberculosis and 7 from other forms, 88 have moved from Westminster
or died, while 116 are still under observation. These persons were
examined:—
At hospitals, dispensaries, or by private doctors 144
At school medical inspections 72
At the Pimlico Infant Medical Inspection Centre 89
At the Soho Infant Medical Inspection Centre 72
