For all London the rate was 105 in 1913, compared with 91 per
1,000 in 1912; for England and Wales the rate was 109, compared
with 95, the rate for 1912.
Table V shows the causes of death of infants in the City as a whole,
and separately in Victoria Ward and St. Margaret and St. John Wards.
There is a slight increase in deaths from diarrhoea and enteritis
(chiefly in St. John's Ward), in congenital defects, debility and
atrophy, syphilis and pneumonia, while there is a decrease in deaths from
bronchitis, injury and neglect at birth, whooping cough and other causes.
In a number of instances, the infants were not born in Westminster,
the families moving into the City afterwards, and consequently there
was no information available until the death was registered.
Statistics of Dwellers in Block Dwellings.—These are set out in
Table VI.
