counter for sale in open vessels should be covered with muslin
or other suitable cover.
(6) It was generally admitted that preservatives are not necessary."
The City Council concurred with the suggestions contained in the
resolutions referred to, and further expressed the opinion that it is
desirable that sealed bottles should be substituted for the metal cans
now in use for the retail delivery of milk.
As some doubt has been expressed as to the powers given by the
Regulations for Milkshops, it is interesting to note that in the Borough
of Woolwich a prosecution was recently instituted against a General
Dealer, who, inter alia, sold milk, for failing to keep his shop in a
cleanly condition ; it was proved that the Defendant retailed over the
counter small quantities of milk, which he kept in an uncovered
receptacle; the shop was in a dirty condition and the milk was therefore
liable to contamination; the Defendant was convicted, and, upon
his undertaking to stop the further sale of milk in his shop, was let off
with a small fine.
