houses of an inferior type to the dwellings now erected. They contained
75 rooms, and acccommodated about 110 persons.
A number (39) of cottages in Willow Street have been, or will
shortly be, demolished, displacing about 200 persons of the working
class; and adjoining is an area for sale which contains 27 houses
occupied by 260 persons. The houses will probably be demolished
also in the near future.
There is, however, much empty or partially unlet property in the
adjoining Pimlico district. Many houses there originally intended for
one family in each, have been converted into tenement houses without
the addition of those conveniences which are obtainable in a modern
dwelling of the type described above. It would effect an improvement
in this class of property if no owner were allowed in future to convert a
one-family house into a tenement house without obtaining the sanction
of the sanitary authority, who should see that sufficient and suitable
arrangements had been made as regards storage of food, cooking, water
supply, w.c. accommodation, &c.
Revenue Act.
Applications have been received by me in respect of 14 sets of
premises, including in them 144 tenements. These have been
inspected by me, with the result that the certificate was granted in
79 instances, 62 were deferred pending certain works to be carried out,
-and in three instances the certificates were refused. The premises in
which the tenements are situated for which application was made are
as follows :—
21, Bourdon Street. Talbot House.
26, Grosvenor Mews. Newport House.
Wardour House. Lyric Chambers.
Marshall Street Dwellings. Caere Chambers.
Charing Cross Mansions. Carey Mansions.
Burleigh Mansions. Nos. 2, 15, 16, 30 and 31, G-arden Street.
•64, Cambridge Street. Mercer Chambers.
