Contacts.-The value of examining children who have been exposed
to diphtheria infection is shown by the fact that five cases were thus
detected, in three of which the parents did not think there was anything
wrong, and were allowing the children to associate with others.
Hoffmann's pseudo-bacillus was reported to be present in eight instances,
and the streptococcus pyogenes in one instance, where a bad throat
developed after exposure to a case of erysipelas.
Seven persons returning from hospital after treatment for scarlet
fever or diphtheria, with discharges from nose or ears, were examined,
and in two instances the diphtheria organism was reported as present;
both were returned to hospital, in one instance further examination in
hospital failed to discover the organism, but the other was retained in
hospital for 3½- months.
The two cases in which the Widal reaction was doubtful were
returned from hospital as not typhoid fever.
In addition to those mentioned above, many medical men and
hospitals obtain reports on their cases from private or hospital
laboratories.

carriages were also disinfected. In addition, a number of rooms
and their contents were disinfected to the satisfaction of medical
men by private firms. 195 articles were destroyed by fire at the
request of the owners.
