Infantile Mortality..The meteorological conditions of 1906 were
such that a high rate of infantile mortality was expected and actually
occurred, but high as it was (compared with recent years) it was not
so high as in 1904, when the conditions were somewhat similar,
although then the temperature was not so high and more rain fell.
The uncorrected rate for the City was 116 deaths per 1,000 births
registered in the City, as compared with 143, the average of the
previous ten years. The corrected rate was 110. The London rate
for 1906 was 130, the average being 149. The infantile death.rate
in England and Wales was 133, being 14 per 1,000 below the average.
Table II., required by the Local Government Board, shows in detail
the ages and causes of death of children under 1 year of age.
An examination of the particulars ascertained on inquiry as to
infantile deaths during the last 3 years shows that there had been
1,278 children born in 363 families, and that 639 of them had died.
