Restaurants and Ealing Houses.—There are 368 places of this class,
irrespective of bakehouses, milk shops, and ice-cream vendors, but the
number is constantly changing.

The following is a summary of the work done in connection therewith:-

The sanitary defects which had to be remedied were mostly that
the walls, ceilings, &c., required cleansing, but in the following instances
additional matters required attention in 1903:—

The defective sanitary fittings include such things as untrapped
sinks and gullies, defective manhole covers. In one case a sink discharged
on to the floor of the larder and the waste had to flow over the
floor to a gully. One kitchen was rebuilt.
The County Council propose to ask Parliament in the coming
session to pass the following regulations for premises used for sale, &c.,
of food for human consumption:—
(1) From and after the passing of this Act the following provisions
shall apply to any room or place in any sanitary district in or upon
which any article whether solid or liquid intended for the food of man
is sold or exposed for sale or deposited for the purpose of sale or of
preparation for sale or with a view to future sale:—
(a) No sanitary convenience or ashpit shall be within or directly
communicate with such room or place;
(b) Every cistern for supplying water to such room or place shall
be separate and distinct from any cistern for supplying water
to any sanitary convenience;
(c) No drain or pipe for carrying off fcecal or sewage matter shall
have any inlet or opening within such room or place;
(d) No such room or place shall be used as a sleeping place and no
sleeping place shall communicate directly with such room or
place;
